A full loop with stops runs seven to nine hours at a relaxed pace. The order below starts at the coast in the morning, when the light is on the water, and finishes inland. Reverse it if you want sunset over the marsh instead.
Morning: the shoreline
Start on A1A with the sun coming up over the Atlantic. The beachfront town at the center of the coastal leg is small enough to park once and walk: pier, a few blocks of shops and cafes, a historical museum in a modest building that punches well above its size. Coffee here, then drive the dune road north or south for a few miles just to see it.
Late morning: the coastal gardens
North on A1A a state park occupies a strip of land between the ocean and the Matanzas River, with formal gardens laid out under live oaks and a coquina rock outcrop on the beach side. Allow ninety minutes. The garden loop is short and shaded; the beach access is across the road.
Midday: plantation ruins
Turn inland toward the Bulow Creek basin, where the coquina walls of a sugar mill stand in the forest, along with the wells and the spring house. Interpretive signs carry the outline of the story. A short trail links the ruins to the creek. This is the quietest stop on the loop and often the one people remember.
Afternoon: the county seat
Drive west into Bunnell for lunch. The old brick buildings on the main street, the county government blocks and the railroad alignment tell you exactly what this town was for. Southern lunch counters here are unglamorous and good.
Late afternoon: the farm country and the museum
West and north of town the agricultural museum preserves working farm structures, livestock and equipment from the century when this county fed a good part of the state. Beyond it the road runs through the fields themselves, and the light at the end of the day across a cabbage field is worth the detour on its own.
Evening
Return east on SR 100 to the coast for dinner, or continue north on the old road toward St. Augustine if you are basing there.
